Google Slides + Chromebit Presentation Information

I would like to thank the good folks who attended my presentation at KySTE 2017. I was stunned by the the number of people who showed up, and you all had some great questions.  Most of what I learned for setting up and deploying Chrome Sign Builder to our Chromebits came from a YouTube video created by the kind people at Cloudbakers. Below are some steps in the process that I typed up after studying the Cloudbakers video as well as researching device enrollment steps. I hope you find this helpful, and I invite you to please contact me if you’d like to discuss this further…

I.  Unbox Chromebit

II.  Connect to TV HDMI, connect a keyboard & mouse, and connect power cable

III.  If device is not new, reset to factory settings, run all updates

IV.  To set-up and enroll the Chromebit device:

  1. Power-on the Chromebit device and follow the onscreen instructions until you see the sign-in screen. Don’t sign in yet.
  2. If prompted, OK the connection of the keyboard/mouse.
  3. Connect to your wifi, accept agreements, etc.  The Chromebit may download updates at this point.
  4. Before signing in to the Chrome device, press Ctrl+Alt+E to go to the enrollment screen.
  5. Enter the username and password from your Google Admin account welcome letter, or the username and password for an existing G Suite user account who has rights to enroll devices.
    Note: You can control the users who can enroll devices in your domain with the Enrollment Permissions user policy.
  6. Click Enroll device. You’ll see a confirmation message that the device has been successfully enrolled.
  7. A few different things could happen next, depending on whether this is your first enrolled Chromebit for use with Chrome Sign Builder or not.  If this is your 2nd (or beyond) Chromebit setup, go straight from here to the Google Admin Console at this point (see step V. below).
  8. Click Done to return to the sign-in screen, where you’ll see “This device is managed by yourdomain.com.” at the bottom.  If screen goes blank after this and doesn’t return to sign-in, restart the Chromebit (unplug/30 sec/replug).  Proceed to the list of steps below…
  9. Repeat these steps for all of the Chrome devices in your organization. For more information about device enrollment, see Enroll Chrome devices.

Sign-in with the desired account (admin privileges);  If the device is stuck for several minutes without proceeding forward, reboot it by unplug/replug.

V.  Go to the Google Admin console (admin.google.com) and sign in with SuperAdmin credentials.

VI.  Go to the Device Management section

VIII.  Choose “Chrome Devices” and you should see your new Chromebit listed by S/N.

IX.  Create a sub-organization “Chrome Devices” (this may already exist if you’ve done this before).

X.  Create a sub-organization under that: “Chrome Signage” (this may already exist if you’ve done this before).

XI.  Create a sub-organization for each location used (cafeteria, lobby, classroom, library, etc.)

XII.  For the listed Chromebit device, click S/N and enable Custom Fields (Note e.g. “DSign01, Location e.g. “Front Lobby”)

XIII.  Step back to the “Chrome Devices” List

XIV.  Select device’s check box and “Move to” the correct sub-organization.  (If this is not your first enrolled Chromebit for Signage, you may need to wait through a 5-10 minute blank screen, then the device should go into kiosk mode and display your sign.  If so, you are finished.  After 10 minutes, reboot it manually.  If this is your first Chromebit for signage, please proceed with the steps below.)

XXXV.  Override each setting, Save

XXXVI.  Set Install Automatically to ON

XXXVII.  Set Allow app to manage power to ON, Save

XXXIX.  Search for Chrome Sign Builder, Install/Launch

XL.  Collections

XLI.  Create a Collection (e.g. Hallways)

XLII.  Enter a name and URL for a sign (e.g. During School Day, After Hours, etc.)

XLIII.  Can use any web link (e.g. Google Slides, YouTube video)

XLIV.  Must hit Enter key after pasting-in the URL

XLV.  Schedule (at this point, I don’t even know if I’m using the correct Roman numerals anymore hehe).

XLVI.  Drag a timeframe onto the schedule or use the all-day

XLVII.  Fill-in the URL shortcuts and info

XLVIII.  If needed, add a Default URL to display at off times (e.g. company logo)

XLIX.  Edit schedule

L.  Export

LI.  Name and Save the file

LII.  Chrome Sign Builder will open

LIII.  Kiosk Settings

LIV.  Expand Chrome Devices>Chrome Signage

LV.  Configure>Upload Configuration File (saved in previous step)

LVI.  Save

LVII.  Restart Chromebit if it’s running, and Sign Builder should launch
